Ok the "Collies " tow weight is 2.8 ton here, (New Zealand I here it's 3.5 :wtf:, if that is correct, anyone know why)
Now I've read that you can re-plate a vehicle, to upgrade it to 3.5

Anyone had it done, know what's involved?

Just curious

It used to be based on the ability to complete a hill start on a 1:12 gradient, which is strange as in Low Ratio it would pull a truck up that slope.

Its even stranger when you look around at other towing limits. Shogun/Patrol = 3.5 tons, LR 90 = 3.5 T, Kia (Sorento ?) somewhere near 3.5T.

The 4.2 litre Amazon is 3.5 tons, but I suspect that is because of the global limit on the 50mm ball hitch plus the 'Gross Train Weight' regulations.

Its an area full of anomalies.

Bob.

I've often thought this was an anomaly too. Speaking from experience (not if the plod are reading!) a 90 series is capable of towing and, more importantly controlling and stopping, a lot more than 2.8ton. Highest on the weighbridge I've had was 4 ton unintentionally - quarry loader driver got a bit carried away! It appears be related to the plated GVW of the truck. I wonder was it done to pass regs in certain markets?

As for the 100... I reckon you could use them as locomotives
