Who is doing what maintenance today?

Spent most of the day working on the Silver Phoenix. MOT due today and in a vain attempt to get up to the garage today, I set to at 07.30. Nah, was never going to happen. Thanks a million to Karl and Landcruiserparts.co.uk for rushing me some bits I needed - they made short work of the bits I broke off road last weekend. But I knew the handbrake needed its annual fettle. Oh Lordy was that a mess. Solid with clay and shale. I got it all cleaned and working but despite adjustment it's just not holding the truck. Time for new linings I thing. It got new pads all round too. I have to say the Miler Ceramic ones have been excellent. They stopped better than anything else I have had and have lasted longer too. Off roading kills pads and a set of OEM lasted me only 1000 miles. The body looks battered I guess but underneath (under the mud) is really really good. That's the Cruiser by the way not me.

Checked the front end too and one bearing needed nipping up. Plus a full de-mudding in the brakes. The ABS sensors all came out and had a clean but I just can't clear the ABS light. I need to run the test to see what it it. I have a brand new front sensor if it's that but no spare rear ones. I have to say that I am very tempted to compare the GS to this VX and see how easy pulling the ABS out might be. I probably need pipe and flaring tools etc but it has to be better than faffing around with the ABS.

Brakes are all over the place and probably need bleeding and a bit of a work out. So, MOT next weekend maybe? We shall see what tomorrow uncovers.

I hae to wonder just how long I can realistically keep this one. I love being in the mud just easing past stricken Discos, cigar in hand and a smile on my face, but having 2 80's is bordering on greedy and expensive. I'd like to resurface the drive too and I can't whilst ever I need to keep servicing the bog gobbler. I guess there is a chance this could be its last Lincomb. I'd better get it up 'that' hill.

Spent a couple of hours sorting out all the gear that goes in the boot (makes you realise how much you carry) had to bin my kinetic as didn't realise it got damaged :icon-cry:
Nut and bolt check, fluids checked etc. Realised I forgot to extend my axle breathers so job for next weekend then need to swap the wheels over.
Will give the lockers a quick test then just need to get loaded up ready for a week in Wales in a few weeks :icon-biggrin: bit of much needed time to relax with some good mates and loads of lanes.

Sort of Cruiser related, I had a new screen in the "Enterprise" as it developed a 9" crack and I thought I might need it to go shopping.

Its amazing the difference the new screen makes.

Then the air con guy turned up to check the system out on the GX and re gas it. Bugger, he found a leak on the pipe that joins the drier so he took one off the 'spares' Cruiser which was in good condition and swapped it over. All good after that, pressure tested good and filled up with gas and oil and its held to the next day so it was £80 well spent.

Still got a lot to do on this Cruiser but I will get there.

Andy

Andy I could do with your AC guy paying me a visit too. Gas lasted a couple of months and suddenly vanished. No cracked pipes as far as I am aware but clearly a leaky joint somewhere.

would this be the end of your mudplugging days then? since your other 80 is being kitted more for overlanding?

Well it could be Andy. It could be. Maybe not just yet but I am pondering. I love the old beast but with two trucks on the drive, 2 Corollas and a Vauxhall Antler it's getting crowded. The beast continuously drips mud and the drive is just filthy. It's getting walked into the house and every time I come in the Missus has to mop the kitchen. It's tiring basically. I need a unit. That would make a difference. Somewhere to store it - on a trailer maybe. I'd like to re surface the drive but just can't with this parked there unless I do it in concrete!

I dunno. Once thoughts like this start creeping in ......

I'm having an extension to my man cave built, knocked out a window and two concrete panels to provide a doorway from the main garage.
I've just measured it up and the inside is 12ft square
Already been on the bay for a few things to furnish it nicely, insulating tiles for the floor when the screed is laid, storage trays on the wall, a nice sturdy workbench, got my eye on a bench drill, Oh yes! and a big fan heater to keep me nice and cosy. More pics when it's finished but here's a teaser,

Nice man cave extension.

I was gutted when had to move out of the unit I had. Back to the driveway and garage. Can use workshop at work for some jobs but can't leave it in bits if need to/had enough.

Fitted a pair of beige leather seats in the GX today. They are more plush and comfortable than the GX seats and have a greater range of adjustment including height. This was pointed out by KW and he was right . I might now convert the whole interior to VX spec. Just one thing to note, the VX front seats are 10kg heavier than the GX ones.

They now have seat covers on them.

That will be the business Chas!

Gutted that hat I have nowhere but the grass to work on my truck, and a shed to keep tools and spares in, but that's it :icon-rolleyes:

Bit more on the GX this morning, since it came with no key pad and only one key I decided to swap out the TVSS system from the other GX into my road Cruiser. 45 mins later:-

All installed and now I have remote locking and working alarm.
The jobs are getting knocked off at a fair rate now, the next I think is to change the key, barrel and immobiliser.

Very nice Andy is there a part number ANC can this be retro fitted to my Jap import??

New coolant radiator in Lil' Blue today, binned the aircon rad so now I can clean the pesky thing when it gets full of mud.

Steering pump rebuilt this evening ready to be torqued up and fitted back in tomorrow. Fingers crossed I have cured the weep.

I must say the fluid that came out was not a pretty colour and looked quite burnt. Will do a flush tomorrow.

Extended the diff breathers, put a new sleeve on the winch rope and done a few bits, need to adjust a rear wheel bearing as a very small amount of play. Bolted the gearbox and steering guards on, tightened the drive belts, swapped the wheels over and gave it a wash. A productive morning.

Don't mention bloomin wheel bearings Gary. It all started out as a simple job to finish off refirbing the handbrake ........

Everything removed.

Cleaned the actuators up and sprayed them with this mysterious zinc stuff that shall not be mentioned.

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.35.42.jpg

Set the discs up in the lathe

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.37.42.jpg

Cleaned the mating faces up where the brake shoe sits.

Now some people really struggle with putting this lot back together. It's not hard once you get the knack.

New springs and pins in. Have to say the old caps were better than the Milner ones.

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.36.18.jpg

With the pad that has the actuator arm, engage the arm into the springload wire first then swing up into place and lock with the clip

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.36.05.jpg

Put the shoes in first and hold them there with the retaining springs.

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.36.30.jpg

Once both shoes are in, put the long spring into the bottom of the shoes first and lock in place with the screw adjuster

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.36.42.jpg

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.36.55.jpg

Then spread the top of the shoes with the plate and spring.

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.37.12.jpg

Put the top 2 tensioning springs in and the small pointless spring

Screen Shot 2014-04-12 at 18.37.33.jpg

And you're done.

Unless of course you then realise that the whole hub is wobbling around like a weather vane as the bearing is about to collapse. Due mostly to the fact that inside the hub there is your very own mobile duck pond.
