Hello all,

My brother tells me that his LC3 is using too much fuel.
He says about 25 mpg, with the 265 x 70 x R17 BFG AT.
He has my old one with 240,000 miles.
He has had the injector sealing washers done under recall.
Full complete Toyota history.
There was NO blow past, or leaking of any sort.
Then he asked me about injectors, I told him they were originals.
He wants to know if he can have them recalibrated by an injector specialist.
I said I don't know, but I will ask here.

The answer I got was 'maybe'. There is an injector specialist appointed by Toyota apparently who looks at the injectors - they tried to recover mine back to spec but couldn't, so Mr T gave me another set. I'll dig through my records to see if I can find the name.

But must be honest - I'm not convinced, because I think the tips are ceramic and when they're done, that's it - time for new ones ...

Mr T can do a spray-pattern test though - has he been for that? And an electrical test to check if they're within spec?

Hi Gary,

Any info at all would be most welcome.

I guess he would not spend the money Toyota want for 4 new ones, as I am sure, that would be big money.

From the 'What a result' thread:

For reference, the Mr T appointed specialists are Feather Diesel (http://www.feather-diesel.co.uk/) who seem to be pretty well set up, just in case anyone else needs their services - they deal with Joe Public too and now have the latest gear to test common-rail injectors, but can only re-tip them. If there are spill-valve problems etc. they can't be fixed.

So there may be hope ....

Injector spray patterns tend to start to deteriorate after 100k and you should consider getting the injectors retipped and serviced around then.

As the spray pattern deteriorates the efficiency of combustion drops, because droplets in the mist tend to get larger and burn less efficiently.

The fact you have done over 200k without economy or power loss is remarkable.

However a set of recon injectors fitted will be about £1k And whether you want to spend that kind of money on such a high mileage vehicle which is still running or put the money towards a replacement vehicle is up to you.

The other point is that running the BFG's will absorb upto 10% of your fuel economy compared to a road biased tyre especially if you run the pressures on the soft side.

The 70 series will also absorb power compared to the factory 65 series as these are now slightly oversize and will have changed the effective gearing form the factory spec.

Any other mods which will effect the aerodynamics such as spot lights, roof racks, or bumpers which expose wheels etc. will have a contribution when driven over 50mph.

I think you are doing well to get 25 !

Hope this of help

Ps these are no ordinary injectors ! They are M&S injectors with compensation valves to overfuel if a cylinder goes down in power and each injector has a 16 digit calibration code which needs to be entered into the management system, so you can't just swap them over yourself.

On a reasonable continuous run, at about 60mph, the fuel economy will be around 28 mpg.
My brother towed his 2000kg caravan, and got between 19 and 21 mpg,

Yup marks and spencer, these are much more complicated than the simple injectors of old fords and Peugeot. The calibration helps the management system control the fuelling

They also have compensation valves to over fuel the good cylinders to keep power up if you loose power which often go out of spec, my original injectors went out of spec in less than 45k

Hence the price of them! You can get your local denso agent to fit reconditions ones which will be as good as a new one, but save you about £50 each.

But the economy figures quotes seem pretty good to me. What were you expecting to get ?

The most common loss of economy is by going to supermarkets which use a higher percentage of biodiesel to branded fuel.
