Headlamp "upgrade" to Angel Eye units

Thanks Ian:thumbup:

The "upgrade" in the title was aimed at the purists who I imagine shudder a bit with these "modern" after market additions.

My view is that things should be functional, and the reason for change was solely for that reason.

Many have complained about the effectiveness of the OEM lighting on the 80, and of course my inadequate dabbling with alternative bulbs in the OEM units came to nothing.

A radical step, maybe, but I'm well pleased with the result so far. There is a solution out there.

That's a great upgrade as you say - form and function, can't argue with that really!

 Looks like a great improvement Clive, I will be getting them sometime, I was thinking of getting mine wrapped too.

I recommend it Chas, if you're not happy with the OEM performance.

Just don't be fooled that it's a plug and play set up on mine. You'll be OK if you use the standard H1 bulbs, but going with the HIDs is a little more tricky. I'm still not convinced, for some reason which we're trying to work out, the mains take a good 30 seconds to cast a beam, whereas the dipped tale about 8-10 seconds which is acceptable. I must have a wiring fault or something we still need to trace.

As posted by someone, LEDs may be an option, or just good old halogens. Anyway, what I wanted was a descent beam profile and now I have just that, and it's great.

I like the look of them too

 I hope the broken bit wasn't in with the one I repacked sincere apologies if it was Clive there was so much padding in there I didn't think there was anything to worry about .

As for the lights they're proper :icon-cool: makes me laugh at my own vanity in wanting a set just for how they look in daylight

Looks great Clive, do they have an E1 (in a circle) as in meeting EU regulations? I would luuurve to fit a set of those. Unsure of the MOT over here, They cannot sort out whether I am allowed a sodding seat belt or not for Christ's sake!

regards

Dave

I'm not sure Dave, but I'll have a look and revert. TBH, I don't give a sh!t here, the police are too dull to care anyway, and I've kept the OEM units just in case the tester won't accept the requisite beer tokens :eusa-shhh::whistle:

Cant be sure if you're allowed a seat belt? Thats lunacy! I would accept them arguing you should have one, but to argue you shouldn't, WTF :wtf:

I fitted seat belts to my second row because there weren't any, and I don't want my kid to fly through the truck and the windscreen in a crash, no complaints from the tester to that thank goodness, I would have taken him to court if he had. Human rights and all that, it should be your preference.

Because I've just washed the truck, for the sake of self-indulgence, a couple of gratuitous photos

And and my complaints about IFS spot lamps, admittedly on the truck for 6 years, but WTF, rusted right through the bodies, lenses are still fine... :icon-rolleyes:

These se will be replaced by a light bar ASAP, and I must get the number plate changed to an in-line type...

What made the HID's a little tricky Clive?

Have a look at my long running thread on 'MUD' Clive, post number 175 IIRC, also note post number 181 later on about the Land Rover Discovery seats/snorkel issue truly unbelievable :wtf: Only then can you offer a sympathetic ear and donate a set of angel eyes headlights, this will ease my pain with the bureaucracy battle here that I fight week after week. :violin:

The decision to go there always is Chas... :|

They take time to warm up for one, and I'm still confused as to why the dip come bright after 8-10 seconds and that mains take so much longer.

Second issue may be something to do with US regs (maybe) but the dip and main units are treated together in the wiring. Imagine the OEM H4 plug that goes onto the twin filament bulb, well the back of an H4 bulb looks something like this chappie...

IMG_3863.JPG

Not too apparent from the photo, but of the three wires, one wire goes to the dip beam module single filament H1 bulb and the other goes to the main beam single filament H1 bulb.

That means, on dipped beam, only the dip is on (just like OEM), but when you switch to main beam, only the main beam module is on (unlike OEM). OEM on main beam (on mine anyway), has the main beam filament of the dip/main plus the single main beam module next to it. 4 main beams in total.

... Does that make sense to you...?

So to replicate the OEM set-up, the main beam module has to power a separate (added) relay that re-energises the dip beam module.

The result will be (when I've figured it out) when on main beam, both dipped and main modules working together.

That's why I want a light bar too, to compensate for losing the main beam from the single filament dip beam module.

Oh, my head hurts! :icon-biggrin:

It's very simple really but a bugger to put into words

Physically, not much of a problem, the HID's need a hole cut in the back of the seals to allow the bulb to pass through because you can't cut and re-connect the bulb plug from the power-pack, it's a bit akin to an HT lead on a spark plug, a highly insulated centre core with a carbon type outer core... something similar anyway.

It's not too much of a problem to re-seal after you've cut the hole, I'll try to get some photos up of that a bit later.

Looking good Clive :-)

Thanks Gav, almost missed you there after a re-read! :icon-biggrin:

The truck's been stinking dirty for the past 6 weeks or so with all the snow and sh!tty roads, plus I took it up my track on Saturday and was wading in axle deep heavy mud (as you do) great fun and the truck never missed a beat! Switching CDL in and out as I went, with a few quick flirts with rear locker and front too on a couple of occasions, 'cos it's steep and you need to keep the momentum going...

It's only a short track, 5 or 6 kms at most, but it has everything mud, rocks, some water, and a steep ascent.

Anyway a wash was in order today, hence the photos... :icon-biggrin::whistle:

Nice job Clive. . I am liking the look bud! I'm thinking that I need to do something similar as the plastic mounts are broken on my drivers side and the passenger unit is has water in it!

Oh yes "Nice jEEP!!!":lol::icon-cool:
