Oil Grade for 30 deg centigrade +

I'll shortly be doing my last oil change before I go south.
Any ideas on what type of oil grade I should be going for?
Research suggests a 15W40 or a 20/W40 but i'm getting a bit stumped
with all the conflicting info.
Any learned insight or experience would be appreciated
Aside from a few cold days driving through France and Italy, my
operating temperature range will generally be between 0 and + 40
degrees. Will be doing a fair bit of mountain driving..
I'll have handy enough motorway driving till Libya - then its sand for a week.
My mileage schedule indicates that I'll be changing oil again in Egypt.
Thanks

Niall,
In theory 15W40 should work better in higher temps, and cold mornings
last only an hour or so.
Apparently, according to http://mobilegypt.com Mobil1 should be
available there.

The handbook says:
10w-30 for the temp range -18 to +40 deg C & over.
15w-40 for -10 to +40 & over
20w-50 for -7 to +40 & over
We did Italy (40 deg C + serious mountain passes) on 10w-40 with no problems, but I've never done "desert".
The only temperature-related problem I had was that the temperature compensator on the injection pump dropped the revs too far at idle when "cold", giving a tendency to cut out when facing up steep hills. This was easily solved by pulling out the fast idle knob a touch to bring the revs back up to 650 or so. The idle speed recovered to normal when we returned to lower temps.
I've never seen a wider range than 20w-50 in dead dinosaurs, but I have bought some 5w-50 fully synthetic locally (for my wife's car, which does 20k miles between changes) ... at =A330+ for 5 litres.
Hope this helps.

I'm no expert but I found that Mobil1 did not perform as well as I'd liked
or as expected, so I will just swear by using truck oil! Fuchs Merk, Titan,
super-syn SL. You won't need 5W-40; I only use this in the coldest months
of the year in the Sahara. At this time of year its warmer in the mornings -
15W-40 would be a good bet. I don't know where you'd get in in Ireland but
john might be able to help you with suppliers/distributors.
Cheers

Bear in mind that Toyota tell you not to use less than 10W in a turbo'd engine.

I know. I just happen to have a handbook which has the official specs,
and I thought it might be useful.
Mine's running on 15w-40 semi-synthetic dinosaurs at the moment, changed
every 5k miles, and it seems happy enough on that. That choice is
driven more by cost and local availability than anything else.

Thanks for the feedback there guys
I'll be running with the 15W40. Its what my research suggested and I'm
happy that it matches your experiences.
BTW - Supposedly the less the difference between the 2 numbers - the
longer the oil wears because there is less additives. The wider the
spectrum of the oil - the more additives.
Cheers

Hey Niall
The 15w40 will be fine, not a good idea to change the voscosity now when
going on your trip I would think.
Its a question of what you can get here and what you can get there.
Maybe when your back you could try to change the voscosity and brand of oil.
I get between 10 and 12,000 miles on fully synth between oil changes and
thats only changing by choice not because I have to cause the oil is bad.
O by the way im sure I can say that we all really wish you all the best.
Plenty of safe driving, good beer/unforgettable sights and experiences, wish
I was going.
cheers

Hey Niall
The numbers are one thing regarding oil but the other is quality of the base
stock of the oil.
Oil will break down over time but the better the quality to start with the
longer it lasts and the longer it lasts the more protection it gives to your
engine.
I know some guys run their cruisers on grades of oil that would appear to
look like water but they flow quicker and last longer.
Its all to do with the additive package and base stock.

im currently planning patagonia to alsaka that should sort me, my vehicle and the oil out!!!!
