Wheel bearing replacement

I know what your saying chris. At first i said to the customer theres no chance they are genuine but i asked him to let me know when he had them and they were packaged up as mine were so i dont know. Maybe its just the amount they buy. Just cant understand how the price can vary that much.

Karl

I expect they have good buying power with a bearing wholesaler Karl.

Chris, point taken. I'm just suprised that their prices are so much lower than every one else.

I went to my bearing stockist for my trunnion bearings and they said they had a range of prices/quality so I bought the best ones they had for £12 each.

There might be more than one Koyo part number / bearing same dimensions different quality? Dunno, just saying :) If anyone has the Milner Koyo's you could check the numbers against the ones I posted in another thread recently, they were from Toyota boxed Koyo's.

Well it looks like I am going to need to change the wheel bearings on the front of LB. After removing the hub and then the CV joint bit, on spinning the hub it sounds very rough and looking inside, clearly water has got in and created some nice brown paste  + there is a bit of play there.

So looking on Toyodiy the originals are pretty expensive when you add in the seals etc, where as Milner do a set for £40. I have read the view on here that [strike:1tabak0g]people[/strike:1tabak0g] Chris is happy to use Milners for these, but just for my own piece of mind, would these be ok?

You really only have two choices Tony. Buy originals or don't. If the answer is no, I'll go with bearings that don't come direct from Toyota, what evaluation criteria can you actually use to determine which 'not' original ones to buy? Very few people have ever swapped wheel bearings on their 90s (on here any way) so I don't think there is sufficient body of evidence to be useful.

In my mind, bearings are such an involved thing to make, there'd be little point in making poor ones. It really would be like forging 1 pence pieces. Given that we tend to treat these things pretty badly by submerging them etc, how long would the benefit (if any) of OEM bearings last?

Get some bought and whack them in Tony.

Chris

That's what I am thinking Chris, especially when looking at Toyodiy the indicated prices (which are normally quite accurate) are about 8 x the Milners ones and the seals. For that difference and the 2 hours it will take me to do the job, I will happily take the chance.

Out of interest will I need a press to replace these bearings? Or will a BFH do the job?

Never done it Tony. It was fine when I had it

What does the manual say for the job? I don't even know if they are taper rollers. Really can't help at all.

TBH James I can shave a little off the bearings but I can't even buy the genuine koyo bearings from my supplier ex vat for the same price as they sell them for. Had this conversation with someone a couple of days ago and we came to the conclusion that they must be chinese copies. When the bearings arrived from Milner they came in a koyo box so must be the genuine thing.

Karl
.
Hi Karl,

Just because the box says "Koyo" there is a safe bet that they may not be Koyo bearings in the box.
Living in China, and trawling the thousands of automotive web sites, one does start to consider that every thing in China could be fake.
It is eye watering to see what can be bought, and for how little.

Or we could accept the fact they they are Koyo bearings in the box and that the markings on them that say Koyo are indeed genuine  Go to a bearing specialist such as BSL with a genuine one in your hand and ask them to get you a match. It will be cheaper than Toyota. Probably be SKF or NSK and a fraction of the price. Why? Because bearings are NOT EXPENSIVE.

I give up. ;)
