High mile 80s

I got looking into the High mile thing 'coz' i just bought a 1997 24v with 320,000 on the clock. It has every single receipt and invoice since new, Full service history, The Guy had it 16yrs and put 170,000 on it.. Today iv driven 225miles and im Staggered how smooth and responsive it is No rust at all in the usual places. Chassis fantastic, Inner wings and rear quarters as good as new. And the manual gear box is smooth, No notchy Changes. and a nice strong clutch.... Its not showroom condition .... So its going to have a full service (All oils and fluids) and get put to work.... So thanks for the Positivity on high mile Cruisers. I got it at the right Money so iv nothing to lose.... I Love it.
Nice one higgy!
So you've got the bug!?
The 1HD FT is the best all round engine toyota ever put in a landcruiser.

Mate has a HDJ80 12 valve with (well) over 600,000km and it just keeps going. His daughter is using it as her daily at the moment (one of those reassuring sights...) as he's using her Subaru due to a broken ankle and the Subaru is auto.

Don't think there's anything to worry about with high miles, I've always preferred stuff with an average of about 15-20,000 miles a year... But seem to have ended up with lower average stuff at the moment.

Thats reassuring Ed.. High miles never bothered me either really. I use to go on the assumption that "What ever needed fixing, Has been Fixed"... Look after it and never Thrash it...

My Landcruiser (80 1HDFT) runs perfectly the only issues are rust related but once, you have those fixed and painted/rustproofed then I can't see much else going wrong. I've got a feeling diesel will be banned before my 80 finally goes to the scrap heap in the sky.

Speaking to Jay today Higgy, he was interested in the progress of his old 80 and well pleased it hadn't gone the other way.

It need never go there.
Eventually the 80 will receive UNESCO World heritage recognition..

Export seems to be hotting up again unfortunately.
A bloke I know recently exported nine to the middle east. I offered to take five off his hands but the job lot offer was too tempting.

I fear the export market to more emission tolerant countries will only increase if the environmental crowd get there way to make the UK a “World Leader” in anti carbon measures and the value of these old trucks (and all older vehicles for that matter) in the home market collapses.

If the prices plummet then more trucks for me, I’ll register them as commercial vehicles if needed.

ha ha! i know a old bloke whos got his peugeot 205 registered as agri..

I know a few that have zil 131s and gaz 66s registered as tractors as in the manual it says tractor unit when you translate it from Russian.

My 81 is registered and insured as a modified commercial two seater vehicle.. if you just use standard insurance for towing for making a living with it, then in an unfortunate event then you may not be covered for what it's used been used for! Undeclared modifications are a get out clause if you need to be covered also..

Mmmmn, its a double edge sword, the breaking thing. There seems to be a pattern with most " desirable" vehicles where they loose money to the degree where a lot of them end up in specialist breakers ( usually due to rust) and these parts then keep the better ones on the road in enthusiasts hands. Then, when you havn't seen them around for a while they suddenly start rising in value, people want to add condition and value to their vehicle and it has both the effect of increasing the quality of the pool and the satisfaction of ownership.
I like others have broken multiple Cruisers, 60's and 80's. The criteria being that they were too far corroded/damaged to be economic to repair and that they all had some redeeming features which helped the deal along. At the time it was the right thing to do and I still think that.
As a few know, I bought plenty of 60's 20-10 years ago, saving a lot from the Africans who wanted them for the "Gunship" conversion, releasing them after they had lost interest and a good few now are in members/enthusiast hands.

I applaud you Karl, if thats what you are doing, as others and I am too, it will only help in the long run regarding the availability of 80 Cruisers.

I guess the export question is one of economics. If a truck is sold, its sold and where it goes is out of whoevers hands. If as CG mentions they go for export they may be run, or they may be broken, who knows. What would most members do if they had a truck for sale and someone turned up with the money but wanted it for export?

You can tell I've not too much to do Sunday evening.

Agreed, I have business use on mine, mainly going to the post office several times a week, you cant be too careful with insurance these days.

Indeed Andy and your trailer contents are covered too..

The guy I brought my 24v auto from was insistent that I wasn't intending to export it before he let me view. He was very fond of it but circumstances meant it had to be sold. The deal he did me on it was amazingly good once we had met face to face and he realized I was an enthusiast. Still in contact now 5 years later and update him on all upgrades many of which he wanted to do himself. I ended up paying a grand under the export value at that time.

On this note, I was stopped by the police for not having business use on my insurance, at 6.30 in the morning, I was towing my Ifor Williams with 6 pallets of produce on it, well wrapped with pallet wrap and very securely strapped, I didn’t know at the time but I guess he was fishing, as at first he stated I had no business use on my insurance which was true, ( I assumed he had checked), anyway, after a very polite conversation and I had told him that my 15 ton DAF had been written off the day before accompanied by photos on my telephone, I said I still had to try and do some work, he let me off as I promised to add it to my insurance ASAP. ( which I did 9 am later that day) There is an urban myth type story around here ( South East) that this is an easy Nick for the police and apparently it started when a m/ bike cop spotted a basket of sandwiches that a woman was delivering in her car and nicked her for no insurance. ( business use) it cost me nothing (£zero,) to add it to my insurance, so I promptly added it to all of mine and my son’s vehicles, be silly not to eh?
It’s a bit like the insurance on my Froader, it’s a real mongrel ( Q plate) , and once gain I thought it would be easier and cheaper to insure it TPFT, wrong!!,
It was the same price to insure fully comp! In the future I must remember to ask all the right questions ( how much will it cost?)
