Last year I put an old Td200 LandRover engine into an ex-Army Defender 110 for a friend. When it runs it puts out blue smoke and the oil turned black very quickly. I was looking for some 'snake oil' that would free-up the rings and found these on e-bay:

Has anyone had experience of such wonder products ?? I sure as hell don't want to be dropping the pistons and re-ringing this old heap.

Personally I can't see how excessive clearances can be taken up by something which is poured into the engine, except by as it says, it thickens the oil to some degree. I would like to have this proven to me by a reputable person who could verify the claims.

As an aside, I use a Rislone product, the zinc additive in the V10 Touareg engine when I change the oil. these are prone to excessive cam wear as the zinc content of the recommended C3 oil has been reduced over the years to the point where the shearing forces of the cams on the buckets overcomes the lubrication qualities of the oil.
This is well known in the V10 circles and I also use a couple of tins of Liquid Moly. On top of 10 litres of fully synthetic the oil change at every 10k isn't a cheap exercise

I used some "piston seal", Holts I think, on a smokey Mk3 Escort CVH engine years ago and it made naff all difference. Rings that are gummed up and stuck in the groves can also cause excessive smoke and compression loss so anything that frees them up could help if that is the problem. I'm with Andy, I just can't see how worn rings and bores can be repaired with something out of a bottle, unless there's a genie in it of course!

My Dad used Holts piston seal in his Merry Tiller rotavator circa 1960. It blew up, putting the rod through the block. Perhaps the product is better now.

As I thought, more likely to do damage than good, I'll give this stuff a miss.

Thanks for the comments, hopefully my local "old car friendly" MOT Centre will not worry too much about a bit of smoke in the exhaust (fingers crossed).

I'm looking forward to this eyesore being removed from my yard. That just leaves a rusted-out Range Rover with a bust autobox but a good BMW V8 diesel motor - anyone want to take it away (the brakes have rusted solid) ??

I've been getting earache from 'er indoors' since I agreed the friend could store these two heaps here !

I take it you've had an underwhelming response for the uplift of the RR?
:laughing: :laughing::laughing:

I didn't expect anything else. I'll have to borrow a transporter trailer and take it to the local Daltons Scrap Merchants. It would be nice if the motor found a new home first however.
