decided to do a bit more on the pig today.

P4090001.jpg

positioned a 2.5" hole saw where i wanted the chimney to be, and marked through the centre of it, to give me a centre point.

P4090002.jpg

P4090003.jpg

centre punched and pilot drilled.

P4090004.jpg

a decent hole saw and plenty of cutting fluid made light work of drilling the hole.

P4090005.jpg

P4090006.jpg

marked the tube that will be the chimney.

P4090007.jpg

and cut it off.

P4090008.jpg

while the cutting disc was in the grinder, i chopped off 3 pieces of tube, these will be the fit together chimney pieces.

P4090009.jpg

ground some galv off the tube where i intended to weld, and cleaned some of the powder coating off the pig.

P4090010.jpg

perfect use for one of my new magnetic corner welding clamps.

P4090011.jpg

P4090012.jpg

cut 2 50mm strips of 2.5mm sheet steel.

P4090013.jpg

marked 25mm in on the 50mm strip, and 25mm in on the tube.

P4090014.jpg

started welding the 2 pieces together.

P4090015.jpg

i welded a bit, and then hammered and bent it around a bit more, then welded, and so on.

P4090016.jpg

had to cut the end off the 50mm strip, and then finished welding it on.

test fitted it.

P4090017.jpg

found a length of 20mm x 3mm strip in the shed, and cut, bent and drilled a hole, in an 80mm piece of it.

P4090018.jpg

P4090019.jpg

drilled the door and bolted it on.

P4090020.jpg

P4090021.jpg

cut and bent another piece of 20mm x 3mm.

P4090022.jpg

P4090023.jpg

clamped and welded it in place.

P4090024.jpg

P4090025.jpg

P4090026.jpg

P4090027.jpg

P4090028.jpg

decided to fire up the pig! :angry-fire:

being a carpenter means theres always loads of fire wood!

P4090029.jpg

decided to do it in the shed due to the fact is was raining very heavily outside.

P4090031.jpg

P4090032.jpg

P4090033.jpg

P4090034.jpg

P4090037.jpg

P4090038.jpg

it got quite smoky as all the powder coating burnt off the old cylinder.

P4090041.jpg

had flames shooting out of the chimney at one point.

P4090042.jpg

P4090043.jpg

put a piece of mesh over the top of the chimney to help prevent sparks from shooting out of the top.

P4090044.jpg

the powder coating burnt off nicely, and a quick brush over with a wire brush took it back to bare metal.

P4090051.jpg

P4090053.jpg

once it was going it was very efficient.

P4090054.jpg

decided to use it to burn out my old panhard rod bushes.

P4090058.jpg

one out.

P4090061.jpg

flipped it around.

P4090062.jpg

and other side done.

P4090063.jpg

very pleased with how well it worked! after half an hour or so it was burning very efficiently and kicking out a lot of heat. i did wonder about maybe drilling a few holes in the bottom to help it draw more air in and burn even better.

what i dont want those is the possibility of hot embers or sparks falling out of the bottom. :?

P4090064.jpg

P4090065.jpg

so i need to make the other 2 sections of chimney, and make the hot plate.

That is a very cool (or should that be hot) piece if kit - even more satisfying is the fact that you've made it yourself!

thanks mate.

im pleased with how its looking and working. :)

cant wait to get it finished, so i can cook a nice big steak on it!

Looking v good ben

Thought about this. When out camping etc how long before you can cook breakfast on it and how fast would it cool down?

Looking forward to seeing it in action

Karl

thanks Karl. i reckon about 30mins for it to get up to temp ready for cooking on.

with the door open its easy to get it roaring hot. :)

as for cooling it down, im thinking a bucket of water! :violin:

i think i will probably use it a lot at home on the patio in the summer.

another project ive been looking into is making my own wood fired pizza oven!

So excuse my ignorance here, but how do you intend to cook on/in it?

For sittting round its going to be great ben.

Never thought about cooling it with water in the morning.

Great thing

Tell me about it ben. Im killing to get out....

Got to get a truck sorted and on the road.... story of my life :violin:

Ah, that makes sense now. Very impressive looking indeed  Hopefully you will make it to Lincomb where we can all marvel at it

You could wrap a couple meters of boerie around it?

oops only just spotted your links Steven.

some interesting burners there.

i havnt been to my works yard for a few weeks as have been going straight to site instead.

anyway.........................i was in the yard today and found exactly what i was looking for!

now i found this piece of metal in a factory we were clearing in Stourbridge, and when i picked it up about 6 months ago, i thought hmmm...................that looks useful.

so i didnt chuck it in the metal skip, but instead put it in the metal store at work.

its a perfectly round piece of metal, and it looks like its been laser cut.

P4160010-1.jpg

its 10mm thick.

P4160011.jpg

its going to form the hotplate on top of the pig.

P4160014-1.jpg

P4160013-1.jpg

P4160012-1.jpg

i want to fill the sides though, between the hot plate and the pig.

P4160015-1.jpg

i did measure up some old acetylene cylinders today, but they wernt the right size. was thinking i could cut a 2" band out of the middle, and scribe this to the contour of the cylinder on the pig.

no real progress today as busy trying to sort my truck out, but will hopefully find some time this week to get it finished.
