    Just about run in

You think social media/PR folks know anything about real life stuff? I have my doubts. Half of the technical stuff in that piece came straight out of the Toyota promotional literature for the launch of the 90 series.

    Just about run in

Not uncommon, I sold my 97 1-KZTE 90 swb with 275k miles on it, still going strong. My 99 2C-TE Avensis has 304k miles on it and is also running well, just having the sill replaced this week. Old tech means long service life if looked after with regular servicing, CR stuff puts too much strain...

    Gearbox oil

Locking rear diff was an option not standard fitment. No harm really as the vast majority never seem to get used and then seize up.
  10. B

    Gearbox oil

GL-5 can react with some bronze parts in gearboxes, if the spec is GL4 not GL-4/GL5 it can mean that the gearbox has bronze parts that don't like GL-5 Oil.

    Gearbox oil

They aren't usually badged as either here, there are UK imports and Japanese imports but the Irish market 90 series were just called Landcruiser and didn't come with either locking or LSD as standard.

    Upper lamps

01 on had clear tops and the older version had red that faded to pink. Same fitment. JDM import ones had the indicators in the tops and were orange.

Suggestions please on tackling this rounded Transfer drain Allen Bolt, Pic Included

Its not a big job to drop the diff, immeasurably easier if you have a pit or a lift but I had neither and did it on my back on the driveway with a trolleyjack to hold the diff up so it could be bolted back in. I think I undid the mounts and left them attached to the diff for ease of removal...

Electric windows not working at drivers door

I had this, it was a wire through the rubber boot at the door. Check continuity of all wires it could be any one. I found the one, taped a new section to it and used the old one to pull the new bit through, then soldered it to the one inside the A pillar plastic cover.

    Steering Rack Bushings

I replaced mine on a 90 following Bobs instructions, it was a few years ago now, and my 90 has been sold since but I got them from either Milners or Roughtrax, good kit and made the steering a lot better afterwards.

Suggestions please on tackling this rounded Transfer drain Allen Bolt, Pic Included

Watch the oil level closely, I ran mine low and ended up heating the front bearing up so it collapsed, allowed the pinion gear to move and it got jammed and bent in the crownwheel on a motorway. Not great to have that happen to you. You can drop the frames easily enough to get in to it. Might be...

Is it the same size bung as the front diff? I have a couple of them lying around after I sold my 90 and took the scrapped diff to my local mechanic for disposal. If you need one in a hurry I could bung it in the post? One tool that works very well for these situations is a manual impact driver...

My 90 series Auxiliary Fuel tank Build - with pictures!

Big savings to be made if you fill up in the Supermarket filling stations most of them are 1.29 euro per litre which is a good saving compared to the Motorway Aire's which are around the 1.44 mark.

90 series - front suspension ball joint wear

My BIL had his Balljoint fail on his 90 SWB , but the first one I ever heard of was a Bulgarian guy on the darkside. Probably getting to the age now where failure is more common.

90 series - front suspension ball joint wear

But the design of these is different, they aren't resisting a compression force, they are being pulled apart. I sold mine with 275k miles on it and hadn't had any failures, I did replace the N/S one as a precaution. I got mine from Roughtrax The Gregorys manual I sold with the vehicle had a test...

    90 Value

I sold my GL which I think is broadly similar to the UK GS spec. 275k miles Flaking laquer on bonnet, small patches of rust around windscreen. All new bushes shocks and ARB rubbers. No tax or test €1500

    Driving without front CV Shafts

If you unbolted the ring gear from the diff centre and refitted every thing else it would be totally sealed. Better than maybe filling the diff with road muck.
  26. B

    Leaking Sump

My colleagues rusted through and he replaced it, the sump isn't that cheap around 380 euro I think but any breakers will have one that isn't rusted for much less if the engine is blown. I can't see that job costing 1500-2000. I'd find another mechanic that one sounds like a robber.
  27. B

    Front Diff

    Two different ratios 4.100 and 4.300 I think R16 is the 4.100 and the R17 is 4.300

    Oil leak on front diff.

Its been my experience that the front diff get largely ignored, probably because its a pain to get to and fill. My seal also leaked and ended up costing me a front diff.

How do you undo these pipe fittings?

Grinder or hacksaw. Those are crimped on at the factory with a very big press. Once you cut the metal sleeve they will separate but you will need to be able to rejoin them.

Speaker grill under the steering wheel

Not in Europe, in other markets they would need comms, thats why there is another slot under the stereo for a two-way radio. I used the little grille to mount my car phone speaker behind.

Diff oil change - hot or cold?

I haven't got a garden sprayer, I used a piece of PVC hose stuffed into a funnel. Took ages because the oil was like treacle.
  34. B

    Axle oil replacements.

LSD diff needs different (more expensive) oil than the standard open diffs. 80w 90 will do for the front but I would recommend putting good stuff in. The oil works hard and the capacity is only 1/3 of the rear diff.
  35. B

loud bang from front driver side wheel

In future don't lock the centre diff on hard ground, you will wind up the transmission to the point of failure as you have found out. These vehicles don't have a low range unlocked centre diff option, its either High (open) High (locked) or Low( locked).
  36. B

    front diff wanted

Check your diff ratio, it will have a sticker on the extension tube, R16 or R17. R16 is 4:100,R17 is 4:300

    Front Diff - Oil Leak

I recommend checking the level frequently, after my experience I realise that the amount of Oil in the front diff is marginal, given that the back diff does the same work because its permanent 4wd then an oil capacity roughly 1/3 of the rear diff is really asking the oil to work hard. The...

    Front Diff - Oil Leak

The Oil seal on the passenger side of the diff failed on mine, lost all the oil (1.1litres) Going up a moderate incline on a motorway, the pinion carrier bearings failed and resulted in the diff locking up. The bearings are only splash fed and any lowering of the oil level can result in them...

    Starting problems

This has been reported before, The fuel tank distribution and return corrodes through at the metal pipes and allows air to enter causing hard starting. The part number is 77017?60350 for the part, its not that expensive but the fix was to just shop off the porous piece and reattach the hose.
  41. B

    Locking axles

Have a look at the front diff, there shoud be a white sticker on the long extension that says R16 or R17 that will tell you the correct ratio diff you need for the rear one. R16 is 4.100 R17 is 4.300

    New member with some Q's

Change the radiator and forget the chip, you are only asking for trouble trying to extract that much performance out of an older vehicle with an engine and drive train that has done mile already.

    Cooling the 1KZ-TE motor:

Just a word of warning, don't trust the stock temp gauge, Toyota fit a resistor to stop it moving around, when it starts to move the coolant is already very hot.

I got one from them a while back. It looked to be good quality German manufacture. No problems to report so far, bear in mind that the balljoint is an upside down model and the tendency is to separate under load.
